The Reading Room

an audio installation

The Reading Room is an installation of books with sound. The central element is an oak library table with a collection of bound volumes. As each book is opened, a sound collage pours out through a carved hole in the body of the book. Rather than paper, the “text” block of each book is unfinished oak, sanded smooth to the touch.

Like many of my installations, the visitor is asked to come close to perform an action (in this case open a book), pause to investigate, and then move beyond the object and into the realm of his or her imagination. I think of this project as a small traveling library, filled with the inner life of dreams.
